Canine H1N1 Influenza

Symptoms of influenza in dogs are:

  • coughing
  • sneezing
  • nasal discharge
  • fever
  • lethargy
  • loss of appetite
  • rapid breathing or difficulty breathing

These symptoms can also be caused by a number of other diseases. However, if your dog is symptomatic or is not acting “right”, you should schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

Protecting Your Dog From H1N1 Infection

The same types of precautions you take to protect yourself and your family from the influenza virus can also work to help protect your dog.

  • Hygiene and sanitation are the most important aspects.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid contact with your dog, if possible, while you are sick and do not allow sick people to handle your dog.

So, there’s no need to panic. However, being aware of the potential for spread of the virus to your dog is important as is taking simple precautions to protect your dog’s health.

Other Pets Affected by the H1N1 Influenza Virus

Besides dogs, the H1N1 influenza virus has also been found in cats and ferrets. Swine can become infected with the disease as can turkeys. There is also one report of a cheetah becoming infected.
