Second Nature ~

This is a new way to potty train puppies I recently ran across. The highly absorbent litter material is made from paper and wood pulp products.

Intracranial trauma in a dog due to being “swung” at birth

Traditional neonatal resuscitation via "swinging" is a dangerous and potentially lethal practice capable of inducing significant brain trauma in the canine neonate."

Positive Reinforcement

Should it be the leash and hand that redirects the dog, or poultry and patience? Current science favors the chicken flavor. But whichever strategy you choose, everyone agrees that the timing must be precise. It is very difficult for a dog to make an appropriate association and learn from the reprimand or reward otherwise.

Excessive Barking~

Barking. It’s one of the things that dogs do. In fact, there are occasions when it’s a benefit to have a dog who barks. If there were a stranger entering your property or if something were genuinely amiss, a barking dog could be downright helpful.

Puppy Teething

Teething in the puppy refers to the process of growing baby teeth (deciduous teeth) and ends with the adult or permanent teeth. The first baby teeth, sometimes referred to as 'milk teeth,' erupt from the gumline around four weeks of age. These teeth are small and very sharp. They may scratch the nipples, resulting in discomfort to the nursing mother. By about six weeks of age, the baby teeth are sufficiently painful to the mother's nipples to cause her to begin to wean the puppies from the nursing process.

Why is My Puppy Biting Me?

Playful biting and nipping is one of the most common activities of a litter of puppies. It is normal behavior. Once you and your family substitute for their littermates, the pup naturally continues to chew on you. No mater what the activity, you eventually find your hand inside its mouth.

How Do I Get My Puppy Used to Its New Home?

An 8-12 week-old puppy gets over the loss of its littermates and mother quite quickly. All of the family members should take turns playing with and holding the puppy. Alternate play times with quiet time in the pen or room you have prepared for it.

Children Toys Can Kill Your Dog

I have heard people at shows say they buy toys at rummage sales and such and give them to their dogs. I pick them up wherever I can. My dogs swing them around, play tug, but usually take a while to wear them down to the point of stuffing coming out and at that time I have always just taken them away due to the mess I know they will make. This is scary and I was not aware of this danger.

Puppy Biting

If you watch a litter of puppies playing, you will notice that they spend much of their time biting and grabbing each other with their mouths. This is normal puppy behavior. When you take a puppy from the litter and into your home, the puppy will play bite and mouth you. This is normal behavior, but needs to be modified so you and the puppy will be happy.
